Garage Sales

We came to find out that the first weekend in May, Cross Plains has a garage sale. We live in a town of 3500 people and there were 81 garage sales. I know this because I had a map with them all on it! Elizabeth, William and I hopped in the car on Friday and parked it then walked around looking at some of the goodies. There is just something about going through people's trash to find my treasure that excites me.

On Saturday after the kids sports clinic, we decided to go check out the sales with all 3 kids in tow. We weren't the only ones with that idea. Our town was poppin! There were cars all over the place and Mom and Dad's pushing strollers with their treasures in it and kids all over trying to convince their parents that they really needed that crap toy. One thing that we weren't expecting was to make it a day event.

One of the garage sales was on a farm so there we bought a kids wheelbarrow and surprised the kids with horseback riding. It was $2 a ride and the kids LOVED it to say the least. I was amazed at Elizabeth as she stood up tall with her pink riding helmet on ready to mount the horse with not a worry in her mind! After the ride we bought some home baked goodies from the 4H club before we hit the rest of the town.

Everyone was very friendly and we met some old men that lived in the farm house on our street for 44 years and farmed the land that in now a row of home that we live on. We also found out from one of them that he was friends with Betty White's husband, Allen Ludden, who used to live on our street and whom the street was named after.

At the very end, we went to the American Legion Park in our town where the local Lion's club was selling brats and giving train rides. What a day for the kids! Horseback riding, brats, soda AND train rides! The kids loved the train and you can see by Elizabeth's face in the picture towards the bottom that she loved hearing the sound of a train whistle. All in all it was a great, unexpected family day and we came home with some great finds as a bonus!
